Q: My water smells so much like rotten eggs that I don’t like to shower in it. What is going on?
A: Hydrogen sulfide gas is commonly referred to as “sulfur” in your water. Sulfur is naturally occurring, therefore it is just part of your water’s chemistry. The gas is basically harmless, but can be hard to stomach. There are some situations where sulfur can cause more problems than just the bad smell, like corrosion. Corrosion due to high levels of sulfur is rare, but it does happen.
Sulfur is really easy to remove, so if it’s driving you nuts, do something about it. With lower levels of sulfur you can filter it out for less than $200. Of course, see a water treatment professional about what type of filter or system would work best for your water chemistry.
