Sulfur (Hydrogen Sulfide Gas)

What is Sulfur?
Sulfur in your water is actually hydrogen sulfide gas. This gas comes from plant and animal decay that naturally occurs.

Why is it bad?
Sulfur in your water won't hurt you, but can be rather unpleasant. It's odor has been described as "rotten eggs." Taking a bath in water with sulfur can be just plain annoying. If the levels are high enough, the sulfur can be corrosive, which will damage copper plumbing.

How do I know I have Sulfur?

  • You can definitely smell it!

  • Testing can be done, but usually if you have it, you know it.

What are some Sulfur solutions?
Our GreenWater system utilizes an oxidizing filtration media to filter out the sulfur. These systems are very easy to maintain and simply require that you add a special regeneration chemical to it's tank a few times a year.

For lower levels of sulfur, carbon cartridge filters can completely eliminate the sulfur and only require that you change the filter 1 to 2 times per year.

If you want the strongest oxidizing filter, then ozone is the way to go. Similar to our GreenWater system, ozone oxidizes contaminants such as iron and sulfur and filters out the particulate. These systems require almost no maintenance as ozone is generated by the system, and no other chemicals need to be added.
