Sediment

What is Sediment?
Anything that is not dissolved in water is sediment. Typically, sediment is sand, silt, and even hard minerals.

Why is it bad?
Sediment can block or plug up plumbing, fixtures, and fill up the tank on your toilets. It can end up in your clothes causing a dingy appearance and even wear them out faster. It can dry out your skin and hair, and is really bad for moving parts in appliances and machinery because of it's abrasive nature.

How do I know I have Sediment?

  • Sediment in your water can have a cloudy or milky appearance.

  • After letting a glass of water sit you can see sand or particles on the bottom.
  • Your faucets may continually plug up. (Always check the aerator and make sure it is clean!)

What are some Sediment solutions?
Every house should have at least a 20 micron filter (a micron rating tells you how small the "holes" in the filter are. 20 microns is about half the size of a human hair) to get rid of general stuff that comes in with well water. This is a good idea, because even if you don't have a major sediment problem, over time even minor sediment can cause problems for machinery and plumbing.

For more severe sediment, there are several options:
For sand and larger debris we have centrifugal seperators that spin the sediment out of the water. Cleaning is easy; simply open the purge valve and empty the sediment trap.
Large cartridge and bag filters also work well for heavy or large sediment. You will need to periodically change the filter.
For very fine debris such as glacial silt (which can be harder to catch) we offer the FreshPoint Ultra Filtration system. This system uses membrane technology to catch everything down to .025 micron, that's incredibly small! Virtually no maintenance is required because the system is self cleaning. Every two to five years you will want to replace the membrane.
