Iron and Iron Staining
What is Iron and Iron Staining?
Iron is a naturally occuring metal that makes up about 5% of the earth's crust. Iron is commonly dissolved in water underground
and can oxidize (become un-dissolved) pretty easily.
Why is it bad?
Iron can leave stains on fixtures and in basins. It can also be visable in the water, make your water taste metallic, and sometimes
even stain your teeth. Iron can also damage glassware by leaving stains, and like hard water - over time iron buildup can damage
appliances and plumbing.
How do I know I have Iron and Iron Staining?
- You can sometimes see it, smell it, or taste it. Most people notice red or pink iron stains
in sinks and toilets first.
- Testing can be done to determine how much iron present.
What are some Iron and Iron Staining solutions?
Generally, a water softener is a great way to go for this problem. Water softeners use a resin to remove iron and hard minerals.
A salt solution is used to periodically clean the resin. These systems are very easy to maintain and only require that
you keep salt available in the "brine tank."
Our GreenWater system utilizes an oxidizing filtration media to filter out the iron. These systems are also very easy to maintain and simply require
that you add a special regeneration chemical to it's tank a few times a year.
For low levels of iron, cartridge filters can completely eliminate the iron and only require that you change the filter 1 to 2 times per year.
