Hard Water

What is Hard Water?
When hard minerals, such as calcium and iron, are dissolved in water, the water is considered "hard." These minerals can easily come out of the water and build up inside of plumbing, fixtures, hot water heaters, dishwashers, windows, showers and shower curtains, and glassware.

Why is it bad?
Hard water can damage appliances with buildup, and dries out your skin and hair. You also end up using more soap and detergent than should be neccesary.

How do I know I have Hard Water?
Normally, you can see the buildup in the form of white spots on dried dishes or in your sink. You'll probably also notice having dry skin. Testing can be done to confirm and also determine "how hard" your water is.

What are some Hard Water solutions?
Generally, a water softener is a great way to go for this problem. Water softeners use a resin to remove hard minerals. A salt solution is used to periodically clean the resin. These systems are very easy to maintain and only require that you keep salt available in the "brine tank." A saltless water conditioner can also be used if you are opposed to using the salt. The saltless conditioners help keep appliances from getting build up, but they do not change the amount of soap you use or help with the dry skin/hair problem.
