Cysts and Microorganisms

What are Cysts and Microorganisms?
Common cysts and microorganisms in drinking water are Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum. Giardia causes giardiasis, also known as Beaver Fever in Alaska, and cryptosporidium causes what is called cryptosporidiosis. These are microscopic protozoa that cannot be seen and cannot be killed with chlorination.

Why are they bad?
Illnesses such as giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis can range in severity from a really bad weekend to major dehydration and hospitalization. Medical treatment is usually required to eliminate them from you body.

How do I know I have Cysts and Microorganisms?

  • If you've got any of these symptoms and have consumed water that may have been contaminated, it's best to seek medical advice.
  • If you draw your water from an open source (surface water such as lakes or ponds) then it should be assumed that cysts and bacteria are present and should treated accordingly.

What are some Cysts and Microorganisms solutions?
Surface water treatment must always involve a combination of chlorination and filtration. These systems can become very complex and you should consult WaterPro for any surface water treatment problem.
