Corrosion (Blue/Green Staining)

What is Blue Green Staining (Corrosion)?
Blue/green staining is caused by corrosion in copper piping. Corrosion may be caused by several factors including high dissolved inorganic compounds (DIC), low pH, high levels of CO2 and many others. This indicates high potential for damage to pipes and plumbing fixtures. Similar to the Statue of Liberty, the apparently blue green staining is copper oxide leached from the plumbing system.

Why is it bad?
Corrosion is not only damaging to your plumbing system, but detrimental to your health. Consuming metals released due to corrosion can cause liver and kidney damage.

How do I know I have Corrosive Water?

  • Obvious blue green staining would be a positive idenitfier for corrosion.
  • Plumbing system failure.
  • Obtaining your Langelier Index would identify your corrosion potential. We offer Langelier testing at our Water Analysis Page.

What are some Corrosive Water solutions?
The most common solution to corrosive water is an acid neutralizing system. WaterPro's NeuWater System neutralizes the acidity of your water and prevents further corrosion of plumbing systems and fixtures. The NeuWater System works by adding "hard" minerals back into the water to buffer the pH. Maintenance of the NeuWater System requires adding neutralizing media every one to two years.
